SUN HOUSE

The Sun House was designed to bring the outdoors in, through space and light. A simple but considered approach to transforming an old house into a contemporary home.

As the project architect and designer, it started with listening to the clients needs and wants, their goal was an open and welcoming home that connected to their garden and together we drafted a multivalent open plan space that flourished from the bones of the old house.

We began, instead of demolishing and starting from scratch, by taking the approach of utilizing the existing structure to enhance the space, we took existing openings and windows and shifted them from small steel sections to large tilting frames, allowing the light and air to cross ventilate through the space. Key non- structural walls were removed and the introduction of a low wall separated the two primary spaces and formalised their relationship while ensuring the danger of slipping down the step was diminished.

The completed project speaks volumes and provides spaces that compliment instead of compete with each other, designed with site lines in mind to allow views from the garden all the way to the front entrance, the design connects the uses; living, dining and kitchen areas of the house into a series of relating but distinct spaces resulting in a home that is warm and vibrant.
