PLAYGROUND

The Playground is a breath of life found in the inner city of Johannesburg, I was proud to be the project Architect for the construction phase of the design
It started as an old leftover space from when the building used it as an office, the brief from the client was to take this space and possibly convert it into a children's playground for the residents of the building.
The approach taken was to simplify, enlighten, brighten, open and flood the space with colour, the floor was broken into fixed and open play areas, with a designated jungle gyms and soccer spaces. The whole room was washed with white and where each feature was, a coloured rubberised floor was placed, with a ceiling colour to mirror the ground. The patterns across the playground broke up the uniform geometries with curvilinear flowing overlapping colours that kids can trace and follow along the floors walls and ceiling.
The whole ethos of the project was to introduce play, a way for the children of the building to engage, interact and explore the space. Throughout the construction, a line of children waiting each morning outside the construction area grew and grew as they saw the place come together, what was once a dark and hidden store room, became what is arguably the best place to be in the building.
